Two
by Ward Kelley
There was sand at our feet the day we considered
floating off on the brown river. You thought to
write our names there; I watched your thigh strengthen
as you bent with the stick. When you arose your face
appeared so certain of what was written, I failed to
question you. Yet these were not our names, or even
the proper sexes; still your dark eyes said this is what
we will be called. How do you come to such knowledge?
The ibis on the far bank called out to us. I wasn't certain
I wanted this journey as you floated: two breasts, two feet.
