THE SCHOOLYARD TREE
by J.D.Heskin

A lot of old boys have climbed that tree--
that tree, the one aloof from the others;
the one whose bark has been worn bare
from hard sole shoes and denim trousers.
Leafless and dying, it will stand a year,
or maybe two, to be replaced with another.

But right now, here and now, behold
the carved names of proud, young climbers
who will live in the prominent places
of memory through a thousand lifetimes--
cherished names that will never wear bare
for a lot of old boys. Or for old girls either.
