IT'S ALWAYS MONDAY
by Philip Vassallo

Monday, September 10, 2001: a tasteless day.
You know the moment,
like the one when you wake up
hearing no difference between
the bird singing at the window
and the truck grinding trash,

just before opening your eyes,
the moment all you know
is the you you just had dreamt about
cannot be you, not really,
the dreams of someone else, perhaps,
but not the person you can be.

The moment stills you, soured from the night before
by the always unkept promise of red and green,
of stale wine, overcooked meat, and undercooked chatter:
unfed human minds with yours
the curdled cream rising to the top,
you say: a tasteless day.
