Pieta by Stephen Pain
for my grandfather

were i in the arms of mary,
were i the son of joseph, were i only
a man, were i to do no miracles,
were i to do no good, were i to
live the life of an ordinary man,
were i to sin, were i to poach
rabbits, were i to lie, were i to
drive a steam roller, were i to
commit adultery, were i to neglect
my children, were i to die of
lung cancer, would i have your
pity, would a modern day michelangelo
carve a pieta for me?
i think not.
