Tadano
"The Crane"

by Pamela Stollings
His benevolent limb cranes
up to the sky
He attracts and retracts
to please his master

He has the power, to be controlled,
to crush those who hurt him
He has no dominions to live by
No one can reach him

I hear his terrified cry as he tries
to climb out of his pain
Life has pilfered his hope
and destroyed his love

Misanthropy consumes him
He is all he has left

He desperately reaches for Heaven
Trying to find a God he once knew
God, won't you help him

He solemnly sits
waiting for the answer
He strains to regain the happiness
those mindless creatures have stolen
God, can't you hear him

Freedom is all
Freedom is everything

His benevolent limb cranes
up to the sky
And I cry out to join him.
