Remington
by Jennifer Sweeney
Tumbleweed spinning through this lonely desert
I ride upwards toward the layered mountains
Their rosy shades intensify
The sun's brightness and the dry heat
Against my brown weathered skin
I slow to feel the prickly spines
of a tall cactus with my fingertips
I tilt my wide-rimmed hat
shading my weary eyes
My boots kick within their stirrups as I give rein
To my ride, leaving the day behind me
The sky colors itself into rich reds and oranges
Then sooths my soul with sweet pinks and soft
purples
as I ride on...
My image but a silhoutte to the touched cactus
stillness calms the tumbleweed
As I fade from view into the horizon.
