The Long Black Line by Sharon Rothenfluch Cooper

One by one,
we follow each other
in a long black line.
It's a sad walk to the front
where the coffin
stands and waits
for us to say good-bye.

I've often wondered why
this must be our last memory
of a loved one. As my turn comes,
I gently close my eyes, think
of the good times full of laughter
and hear her whispered voice,
"Remember me."
