black words by john sweet

his hands tied
behind his back
his blood spelling out
black words in
the dust

a language
but not a new one

and then a wife to
be told and
children

this is your father

this was your father

and history
which we are always
forgetting

which we
are always rewriting

and poetry
and the dogs who
piss on it

there is beauty
even here
